Dr. Jerri Nims Rooker, Associate Director of the Center for Law, Health and Society at Georgia State University will discuss the health, law, ethical and faith issues associated with embryonic stem cell research. Heralded as having great promise in the curing of many diseases and injuries, it has been very controversial because of the use of human embryos. Having recently organized a conference at GSU on the various aspects of stem cell research, Jerri can address the current status of the research as well as some of the viewpoints of people of faith. Her presentation will include some of the alternatives to the use of human embryos, and will address some of the Biblical basis for the views of stem cell use that are held by Christians.
Having received her doctorate in law (J.D.) from the Georgia State University College of Law, Dr. Rooker was in private corporate law practice in Atlanta before joining the Center. She manages the Center’s community programs, including those related to health law. She has researched and written on health law issues, including the ethics of stem cell research. She has been active with the Georgia legislature as they have debated issues related to stem cells and other health issues.
There will be a time of discussion after Dr. Rooker’s presentation.

ATL RTB March Chapter Meeting...
Dr. David Sherrill reviews “The Edge of Evolution”

Dr. David Sherrill
Professor of Chemistry
GA Tech
Thursday, March 27th - 7:00 PM
The “Net”
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta
Directions to Johnson Ferry Baptist
Dr. Sherrill will present a review of the book, "The Edge of Evolution," by Lehigh University biochemist Professor Michael Behe. Dr. Behe is one of the leaders of the "Intelligent Design" movement, and in his new book, he attempts to argue on qualitative and quantitative grounds that random mutation and natural selection are insufficient to give rise to the biochemical complexity observed in living organisms.
David Sherrill received his B.S. in Chemistry from MIT in 1992 and his Ph.D. in computational quantum chemistry in 1996 after working as an NSF graduate fellow in the laboratory of Henry F. "Fritz" Schaefer at the University of Georgia. After an NSF postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, he came to Georgia Tech in 1999 as an Assistant Professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and was promoted to full Professor in 2008. Since 2006, he has also held a joint appointment with the Computational Science and Engineering division of the College of Computing. He serves as co-director of the Center for Computational Molecular Science and Technology. His area of research is quantum chemistry, involving the calculation of electronic structures. The success of this research is indicated by the publication of over 70 peer-reviewed articles and the achievement of the rank of Professor in a very short time period. Interest in teaching is also reflected in the winning of the W. Howard Ector Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006.

ATL RTB February Chapter Meeting...
Growing Edges in the Science-Faith Dialog
“Mini-Conference”
Thursday, February 28th - 7:00 PM
The “Net”
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta
Directions to Johnson Ferry Baptist
The February meeting of RTB will be structured like a mini-conference with several short presentations by some of our members. They’ll be speaking on what they see as the growing edges of the effort to find harmony or congruence between science and faith. We will leave time for discussion afterward to allow input from the audience about how you see the challenge of using science to strengthen faith.
During the past year we have had far-ranging conversations that included the current dialogs about intelligent design, evolution, Francis Collins’ biologos, the fine-tuning of the universe for human life, etc. We have had presentations on the reliability of the Bible and a presentation on The Miracle of the Kidney to continue our series on the miracle of life and the body. We have asked the presenters to share about their personal “growing edge”, what they are thinking about and praying about at present in the arena of using science and nature to bring people to think about their Creator.

We are pleased to announce a very special out-of-town guest speaker, Dick Fischer, who is the Founder and President of the Washington DC based Apologetics Ministry, the Genesis Proclaimed Association. Dick will be presenting to us an overview of his upcoming book, Historical Genesis from Adam to Abraham.
Historical Genesis from Adam to Abraham corroborates the Genesis 2-11 narrative about the Garden of Eden, the Genesis Flood, and the Tower of Babel with the history of the ancient Near East. These well-known biblical persons, places, and events are placed entirely within the bounds of southern Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq, from about 7,000 to 4,000 years ago.
Dick Fischer is the founder and president of Genesis Proclaimed Association, a ministry devoted to finding harmony in Bible, science, and history. Dick has a Bachelors of Science degree, a Master’s degree in theology and was listed in Who’s Who in Theology and Science. He belongs to the American Scientific Affiliation, Alliance for Science, Christian Educators Association International, Interdisciplinary Biblical Research Institute, American Academy of Religion, and the Society of Biblical Literature. Dick has had articles published in the Washington Post, Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith, Teachers of Vision, and Cosmic Pursuit Magazine. Research for the book, Historical Genesis from Adam to Abraham, was conducted in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC near to Fairfax, Virginia where Dick resides.
