A Chronological Timeline of the History of the Kings and the Published Prophets of Israel

1000   ▒   - Saul (40 yrs)
  999   ▒
  998   ▒ The First King
  997   ▒ of Israel
  996   ▒
  995   ▒ 1000 BC - 960 BC
  994   ▒
  993   ▒
992   ▒ And when Samuel saw Saul,
991   ▒ the Lord said unto him,
990   ▒ Behold the man whom I spake to
989   ▒ thee of! this same shall reign
  988   ▒ over My People. -1 Samuel 9:17
  987   ▒
986   ▒ God never wanted the children of
985   ▒ Israel to have a king, but they
984   ▒ rebelled against Him and demanded
983   ▒ to have one like all the other
  982   ▒ nations.
  981   ▒
980   ▒ God gave them a King, even
979   ▒ though He warned them that a
978   ▒ king would abuse them and lead
  977   ▒ them into sin.
  976   ▒
975   ▒ God told Samuel to command
974   ▒ Saul to attack the Amalekites
973   ▒ and destroy them, including the
972   ▒ women, children and livestock.
971   ▒ Saul instead spared the life of
970   ▒ Agag the king, and kept the best
969   ▒ animals to offer as sacrifices.
968   ▒ Samuel rebuked Saul and said, "to
967   ▒ obey is better than sacrifice",
966   ▒ and "Because thou hast rejected
965   ▒ the word of the Lord, He hath al-
964   ▒ so rejected thee from being King.
  963   ▒ -1 Samuel 8:4-15:35
  962   ▒
  961   ▒
  960   ▒ - David | 960 BC - 920 BC
  959   ▒ (40 yrs) |
  958   ▒
957   ▒ And the Lord said unto Samuel,
956   ▒ "How long wilt thou mourn for
955   ▒ Saul, seeing I have rejected him
954   ▒ from reigning over Israel? fill
953   ▒ thine horn with oil, and go, I
952   ▒ will send thee to Jesse the
  951   ▒ Bethlehemite: for I have
950   ▒ provided Me a king among his
949   ▒ sons." And Samuel did that which
948   ▒ the Lord spake, and came to
  947   ▒ Bethlehem. - And Samuel said
946   ▒ unto Jesse, "Are here all thy
945   ▒ children?" And he said, "There
944   ▒ remaineth yet the youngest, and,
943   ▒ behold, he keepeth the sheep."
  942   ▒ And Samuel said unto Jesse,"Send
941   ▒ and fetch him:... And he sent,
940   ▒ and brought him in... And the
  939   ▒ Lord said,"Arise, anoint him:
938   ▒ for this is he." Then Samuel
937   ▒ took the horn of oil, and
936   ▒ anointed him in the midst of his
935   ▒ brethren: and the Spirit of the
934   ▒ Lord came upon David from
  933   ▒ that day forward.-
  932   ▒ -1 Samuel 16:1,4,11,12,13
931   ▒ But David also sinned against
930   ▒ God by sleeping with Bathsheba
929   ▒ and killing her husband Uriah.
928   ▒ David paid for his sins at the
927   ▒ hands of his own sons. One of
926   ▒ his sons, Absalom, even tried
925   ▒ to kill him and take his king-
924   ▒ dom. At his death, another
923   ▒ son, Adonijah, tried to usurp
922   ▒ the throne from Solomon.
  921   ▒
  920   ▒ - Solomon | 920 BC - 880 BC
  919   ▒ (40 yrs) |
  918   ▒
  917   ▒ - Solomon"s Temple begun
916   ▒ in the 2nd mo. of his 4th yr.
  915   ▒
  914   ▒
913   ▒ The apparent conflict between
  912   ▒ 1 Kings 6:1 and Acts 13:17-22
  911   ▒ which both date Solomon"s Temple
  910   ▒ as having been begun 488 and 573
909   ▒ years after the exodus respect-
  908   ▒ ively, a difference of 93 years,
907   ▒ is explained through the Compan-
  906   ▒ ion Bible"s App. 50.VII.(11) on
  905   ▒ the "Lo-Ammi" periods of the
904   ▒ history of the Nation of Israel.
  903   ▒ "When Israel was regarded...as
  902   ▒ "Lo-Ammi," i.e. Not My People
  901   ▒ (cf.Hos 1:8,2:1) then; Jehovah
900   ▒ dealt with them on a different
899   ▒ principle in recording time.
898   ▒ During these periods their
897   ▒ national history years are
896   ▒ smited from the years of the
  895   ▒ world"s lifetime. When they were
  894   ▒ Lo-Ammi, the events recorded in
893   ▒ the Scriptures, were recorded
892   ▒ according to a reckoning we have
  891   ▒ termed "Anno Dei"(in GOD"S year)
  890   ▒ and not according to"Anno Mundi"
889   ▒ (in the year of the world)
  888   ▒ reckoning."
  887   ▒ There were 5 Lo-Ammi periods
886   ▒ between the Exodus and the King-
  885   ▒ dom. Mesopatamia-8yrs., Moab-18,
  884   ▒ Caanan-20, Midian-7, Philistine-
  883   ▒ 40,= 93 yrs. thus explaing the
  882   ▒ apparent conflict. See
  881   ▒ Judges 3:8,14 4:2,3 6:1 13:1

Kings of Israel is a chronological timeline of the history of the Kings and the published prophets of Israel, with notes, comments and scripture references on each one.

The reigns of each King will be signified by a graphics character for each year of his reign. In the event of an overlap of reigns, the graphics character will be highlighted. The absence of a graphics character signifies a gap, during which time there was no King.

 REIGN OF KING

▓
OVERLAPPING REIGNS OF 2 KINGS

DISCLAIMER ON DATES

Anyone that has ever seriously studied the history of the Kings of Israel should be well aware of the conflicts involved in dating their reigns. Several seemingly contradictory accounts are given in reference to the dates of ascension of certain kings, as well as to the length of their reigns. For instance, 1 Kings 15:25 tells us that King Nadab of Israel began reigning in the second year of Asa, king of Judah and that he reigned for two years. But, verses 27-28 say that Nadab was slain by Baasha in the third year of Asa, only one year later. This same situation occurs again with Baasha's son Elah and also with King Ahaziah of Israel. (see 1 Kings 16:8-10 and 1 Kings 22:51, 2 Kings 3:1) 2 Kings 1:17 also complicates the dating of the reign of Ahaziah's brother and successor, King Jehoram of Israel.

Perhaps the most confusing account of all the Kings of Israel is that of King Ahaziah of Judah. According to 2 Kings 8:25-26, he began reigning in the 12th year of Jehoram of Israel at the age of 22, but 2 Kings 9:29 gives the date as one year earlier, in the 11th year of Jehoram of Israel. The Chronicles account doesn't mention which year Ahaziah of Judah began reigning but it does mention his age at his ascension as being 32, ten years older than in the Kings account. (see 2 Chronicles 21:5)

Another complication to Ahaziah of Judah, is that his father, who was also named Jehoram, had begun reigning over Judah in the 5th year of King Jehoram of Israel and reigned for eight years (up until the 13th year of King Jehoram of Israel). This implies an overlap of reigns of one or two years. (see 2 Kings 8:16-17) These overlaps occur in several instances, but with the
exception of the cases where the ruling king is slain, they can possibly be explained by the younger king having begun his reign before the older king actually died as in the case of Jotham and Uzziah (2 Kings 15:5). In any event, all overlaps that occur are marked as such, and left at that.

KINGS OF ISRAEL in no way claims to be an authority on the exact dates of the reigns of the Kings of Israel, nor does it attempt to offer a conclusive explanation for any apparent conflicts found in the scriptures, but rather seeks merely to provide a historical chronology of the Kings of Israel, according to the Biblical account, within a general time frame supplied by dates taken from a previously published source.

The dates of the reigns of the Kings of Israel were taken in their entirety from appendix 50 .V. of the Companion Bible. All Scripture references are taken from the Authorized Version of 1611.
