Dr. Perry Ginn

-  Christian Faith and Modern Science   - Thursday, Oct 28th

Dr, Perry Ginn will present a paper he prepared for the Preaching Consultation, April 25, 2000 at Callaway Gardens  in association with McAfee School of Theology, Mercer University Atlanta – Atlanta, Georgia

Biographical Sketch of Perry Ginn

Dr. Perry Ginn has more than a lifetime of wisdom and experience in the area of science and faith. Currently 75 years young, Dr. Ginn has been an ordained Baptist minister for 55 years. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with an earned Ph.D in Old Testament Interpretation.

In addition to student pastorates, he has served as pastor of First Baptist Church, Hodgenville, KY, First Baptist Church, Princeton, KY, Sevier Heights Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN, First Baptist Church, Gainesville, GA and Peachtree Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA.

He retired in 1997 but then in late 2000 he was requested to come out of retirement to be pastor of Valley Brook Baptist Church, Decatur, GA, on a part-time basis. He continues as pastor of that church to the present.

Dr. Ginn has been a student of modern science and the Christian Faith for most of his adult life. He describes himself as an old fashioned middle of the road Baptist but he rejects fundamentalism. As a student of the Hebrew Old Testament, he rejects as non-biblical the young earth interpretation of Genesis.

In the past he has taught adult classes on Modern Science and the Christian Faith - positive on science and, of course, positive on the Christian faith and their relationship. He continues to study the literature on both sides of the old earth/young earth controversy, the evolution question and intelligent design.

Dr. Ginn is known within the GA Southern Baptist Convention for his bold stance on the need for the church to understand and embrace modern science and to be a relevant to a seeking world in today's scientifically minded culture. We are pleased and honored to have him in our Chapter.

THE ERA OF THE GLIMPSE OF GOD    - Thursday, Sep 30th

In 1963 humankind entered into a new era when the beginning of the universe was discovered.

The discovery in 1963 by Bell Labs scientists Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson of the cosmic microwave background of the Big Bang set the seal of approval on the theory, and brought cosmology to the forefront as a scientific discipline. It was proof that the universe was born at a definite moment, some 13.7 billion years ago.  Read more about this discovery on the Bell Labs web site.

Penzias and Wilson

The existence of an unseen God instantly became an attractive speculation to some in the scientific community and a strong persuader to others.  To believers, however, the discovery confirmed a prominent and bold claim of the Genesis narrator, an ancient writer who not only claimed a beginning, but also supplied some details on what his God had done on six creative "days."

To believers who understood that God had made a firm decision to be invisible in the present creation, the discovery of the long hidden cosmic beginning resonated with evangelistic New Testament preaching about "The God who made the world and all things in it... Lord of heaven and earth" (Acts 17:24).  Preaching about "Jesus and the resurrection" (Acts 17:18b) had now been reinforced with an apologetic tool.

As Old Testament and Torah scholarship absorbed the significance of the discovery, it became clear that experimental findings of modern science should be viewed a valid interpretive tool.  Biblical hermeneutics, the discipline of understanding biblical texts in their cultural and contextual settings, found an ally in that the experimental findings of modern science and the literary interpretation of the Genesis narrative began to develop a harmonious relationship.

Paul will share some personal details about the impact of the world's recognition of Penzias and Wilson being awarded the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of a cosmic beginning.  Paul was working in the physics labs at the University of California at Irvine and teaching astronomy at California State University at Northridge when this announcement was made and humankind entered the "Era of the Glimpse of God."

Also, he will share some of his research into how the Genesis writer is best understood from within his total literary and cultural context, employing the responsible methods of biblical interpretation that can provide us with the highest degree of confidence that we are understanding the meaning of this ancient narrator correctly.

As Paul says of his upcoming presentation, "this research has been shared and discussed with many Old Testament scholars, but now I would like to bring out its pastoral implications.  I believe it is important for us to have this kind of assurance that responsible biblical scholarship attempts to provide, not just for practical evangelistic purposes and for pastoral care, but also for our personal faith and experience with God".
