2007 Meetings...
The Staff of ATL RTB would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a joyous new year. As we look back, we were truly blessed this year with terrific speakers, with our first ever science camp, and our best Christmas social yet! Just let us not forget to reflect on what a wondrous creation God has set before our senses... and that his love for us is even more wondrous ... that He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, into this world some 2000 years ago as a newborn babe to save us from our sins. Let's be sure to give God the glory for all he is going to do for us in this coming year!

August 2007 Chapter Meeting
The Great Global Warming Swindle
Thursday, August 30th - 7:00 PM
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta
Directions to Johnson Ferry Baptist
This month’s meeting of Atlanta Reasons to Believe will feature a video on global warming entitled “The Great Global Warming Swindle”. This video, produced and aired on television in the UK, is a controversial view of one of the biggest issues of our day. It joins other controversial videos such as “An Inconvenient Truth” and a great volume of debate. This video is presented somewhat as a continuation of our previous session on global warming early in 2007. While no pretense toward final judgment on this complex issue will be made, we feel it can be an interesting and informative session. We are stewards of the Earth and should be as well informed as possible.
Since we are not likely to achieve the final word on the global warming debate, consider as a secondary agenda the discussion of how people of faith should contribute to the pressing debates of society. It is fundamental to our mission to show that science and faith are congruent, and it follows that thoughtful Christians should contribute careful analysis and integrity to the societal debates that arouse such passions and are influenced by so many powerful special interests.
Be sure and join us for this most interesting and controversial topic… bring your friends and family.
July 2007 Chapter Meeting
Panel and Group Discussion
The Congruence of Science and Faith
Thursday, July 26th - 7:00 PM
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta
Directions to Johnson Ferry Baptist
This month’s meeting will feature a panel and a group discussion of the general area of congruence of science and faith. Several of our regular members will share briefly their experience with the issues of science and faith, and their view of the role that our Reasons to Believe chapter can play in ministry in the Atlanta area. We are interested in getting the views of those attending about this general area and about future programs that would be of value to them. We also would like to invite members to come with their questions on any science & faith topic.
Dr. Nave will moderate a general discussion after the introductory comments of the panel, soliciting input from the panel as a part of that discussion.
We will continue at following meetings with more programs from the medical community, following the excellent presentation by Dr. Delon Barfuss on The Miracle of the Kidney at our June meeting.
Be sure and join us, this meeting is important to help establish the future direction of our chapter…

Special Announcement...
The staff and members of ATL RTB would like to extend a special welcome to our new chapter President...
Dr. Rod Nave
Dr. Nave brings a wealth of apologetic knowledge and scientific background to the chapter's leadership...
Rod Nave has recently retired after a career spanning almost 40 years in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University. He earned a Ph. D. in Physics from Georgia Tech and did research in molecular structure using microwave spectroscopy. That research was continued in a post-doctoral appointment at the University College of North Wales and while on the faculty at Georgia State University. Subsequently he did research in electron spin resonance, studying the affects of ionizing radiation on biologically related molecules.
Out of the teaching of prospective high school physics teachers arose the project called HyperPhysics. Now sponsored by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, it is accessible at http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hphys.html or by putting HyperPhysics into a search engine. It was envisioned as a continuing resource on the internet for those who were teaching high school physics. It has reached a much wider audience than that target audience. This HyperPhysics project has grown rapidly into a worldwide resource on the internet with over 50 million file hits annually, and with CD versions of HyperPhysics sent to 65 countries to date. It has been translated into German and Italian. The further development of HyperPhysics remains a major occupation. In 2005 HyperPhysics was awarded the international Merlot Classic Award for Physics.
With a deep commitment to both faith and science and their congruency, Dr Nave is an active member of First Baptist Church, Mableton, GA. He serves as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and director of the boys mission organization, the Royal Ambassadors. He has served as Faculty Advisor for the Baptist Student Union (now Baptist Student Ministries) at Georgia State University for over 30 years. He is current president of the Christian Faculty Forum on the GSU campus.
And without saying... a very special THANKYOU!
to our out-going president, Robert McKnight
Robert provided outstanding leadership and faithful service to our chapter as president for 2006-2007. Robert is moving to Colorado... we'll miss him.

June 2007 Chapter Meeting
Dr. Delon Barfuss
The Miracles of the Kidney
Thursday, June 28th - 7:00 PM
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta
Directions to Johnson Ferry Baptist
We are very pleased to announce that Dr Barfuss will be presenting an interesting and informative insight into the Miracles of the Kidney. This is one of our first presentations covering one of the many miracles of the human
body that we so often take for granted.
Be sure and
join us for this exciting and informative presentation.
Dr. Delon W. Barfuss is chair of the CMBP program in the Department of Biology at Georgia State University. He received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Zoology from Utah State University in Logan, Utah and a PhD. in
Physiology at the University of Arizona Medical School. He chose the University of Alabama at Birmingham as his first position after receiving his PhD. He worked at UAB for 3 years as a Fellow and 7 years as a Research
Associate. In 1984, Dr. Barfuss joined the Biology Department at Georgia State University and has been here ever since. He says that he is most proud of the fact that he has contributed to a better understanding of the
kidney nephron and feels that his career has focused on understanding the basics of kidney transport because when he began, it seemed to be a blank slate. "The questions back then were very basic, 'How does the kidney
work?', 'What are the transport mechanisms', it was a little easier to get grants!" he says, comparing his earlier career with current state of the Biology field.
