“The evidence of intelligent design in the human body is overwhelming as long as one does not have an a priori bias against the spiritual and supernatural. As a liver and pancreas surgeon, I find that these organs with their unique anatomy and physiology as well as their multiplicity of functions are so remarkable in their design that it is difficult to believe that the blind forces of time, matter-energy and chance could yield such complex organs of homeostasis and substrate management. Our goal will be to examine these aspects of the liver and pancreas and, in so doing, gain further insight into Human Body as a paragon of God’s creative power.”
Dr. Galloway has both the perspective of a medical doctor and a patient as he speaks to the theme that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" by our Creator. Last year he spoke to Reasons to Believe on his experience with acute myelogenous leukemia. That was a remarkable testimony of a personal experience with Christ as he clung precariously but tenaciously to life. This year he returns to RTB to address the amazing nature of life in the area of his medical specialty.

Straight Talk to Believers Concerning the Creation/Evolution Controversy

Thursday, September 25th - 7:00 PM
The “Net”
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta
Those who are saddened by the degeneration of the American culture and the principles on which our nation was founded, should realize that a lack of understanding of the so called Creation/Evolution controversy is contributing to the problem. Because of our lack of understanding concerning this issue and subsequent confusion that has been generated, and the church's inability to provide credible and intelligent leadership, the present younger generation is abandoning Christianity and its world view. In actual fact, the subject of Creation and the subject of Evolution are two unrelated phenomena. Creation is concerned with the question of "who" is responsible for the universe and life coming into being whereas Evolution is concerned with what happened after the universe and life came into being.
It is past time for believers to become better educated as to the known facts of this controversial topic or else witness the further demise of our culture and future generations. Evangelism directed toward educated people today becomes ineffective, if not insulting, when clearly the Evangelist does not understand the major issues surrounding God's creation of the universe and life and His subsequent plan for increasing the number of species (3-30 million) that cover the face of the earth. The result of a greater understanding of Creation and Evolution will help individuals to find the God of the Bible and help our country, particularly the younger generation, to return to those values upon which our country was originally founded.
Key topics to be discussed:
1. The error and consequences of Scientific Creationism and an "Early Earth" creation, and the hostility that this position has created.
2. The scientific basis of creation
3. The scientific basis of Darwinian Evolution
4. Intelligent Design (ID) and why it is a valid theory (answers to Francis Collins and Francisco Ayala, who disagree).
5. Highlights of recent books by Kenneth Miller, Francis Collins and Francisco Ayala.
6. Why the theory of evolution does not present a problem for believers.
Dr. E. C. Ashby, Regents' Professor and Distinguished Professor Emeritus School of Chemistry and Biochemistry Georgia Institute of Technology, is the author of "Understanding the Creation/Evolution Controversy - A Scientific Evaluation Consistent with Both Modern Science and the Bible". Dr Ashby presented “Understanding the Creation Evolution Controversy” to ATL RTB in May 2006.
ATL RTB August Chapter Meeting...
A Simplified Apologetics: What is the point if we lose the focus?
|
Thursday, August 28th - 7:00 PM
The “Net”
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta
This presentation is from the perspective from a scientist, engineer and poet on approaches to communicate a reasonable approach to faith. In particular, it will try to lay out a simplified approach to apologetics that focuses on asking the ‘correct’ questions. The talk will give a general overview of classical, evidential and presuppositional apologetics, intelligent design and the philosophical basis of science while addressing ‘What did Lewis Know?’.
Dr Ferguson has expressed an interest in having an active discussion on this topic, so reflect on your ideas about how best to communicate faith in this age and come prepared for discussion.
Ian T. Ferguson is a Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and Director for the Focused Research Program on Next Generation Lighting at Georgia Tech. His research focuses on the area of wide band-gap materials and devices (emitters, detectors and electronics) using GaN and ZnO and developing these materials for illumination, spintronic and nuclear detection applications. The area of nuclear detection his work focused on was developing new scintillator materials (optical and electrical) and system miniaturization through robust semiconductor based detection systems. He has over 220 refereed publications, six book chapters, edited ten conference proceedings, two books and multiple patents. He has given over 300 invited, contributed talks and seminars throughout the US, Europe and Asia. He founded the International Conference on Solid State Lighting which is now in its eighth year.
In addition to his active scientific investigations, Ian Ferguson has been an enthusiastic student of ways to communicate the Christian faith and an active analyst of the current challenges to faith. Ian’s last presentation to Reasons to Believe was entitled “Did Flew Fly?”, a reflection on the movement to faith in a Creator by one of the world’s foremost atheists.
ATL RTB June Chapter Meeting...
Living in Truth: Doing Apologetics in an Unsympathetic Church in an Unsympathetic Culture
Is it possible to transmit Christian faith, character, and consciousness
to a new generation of believers in a therapeutic culture?
|
Thursday, June 26th - 7:00 PM
The “Net”
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta
Coming from the passion for issues in bioethics and biotechnology that led him to found the Humanitas Project, Michael Poore will discuss the influences of what he calls a therapeutic mindset on the cultures views of what it means to be human. He will define what he means by therapeutic and describe how it challenges committed Christian discipleship in a secular age. The task here is appropriately termed apologetic since it seeks to defend the historic Christian view of what it means to be human. In changing the meaning of our humanity, the therapeutic mindset is changing the meaning of health, aging, suffering, disability, dying, normal functioning (vs enhanced functioning), etc.
Michael Poore is founder and Executive Director of The Humanitas Project: A Center for Bioethics Education, located in Cookeville, Tennessee. He holds the Master of Arts in Religion from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He is also director of The Humanitas Forum on Christianity and Culture, a lecture series in Nashville, Tennessee. The Forum is designed to help Christians develop both an accurate understanding of contemporary culture and the ability to engage this culture on the basis of historic Christian convictions.
Michael and his wife, Janet, have five home-schooled children, two in graduate school, two in college and one in high school.
ATL RTB May Chapter Meeting...
The Last 100 Years of Science Strengthens the Case for Faith
Dr. Rod Nave |
A review and discussion led by Dr. Rod Nave and Bruce Phillips
using material from Modern Physics and Ancient Faith by Stephen M Barr.
Thursday, May 29th - 7:00 PM
The “Net”
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta
Persons of faith have for thousands of years drawn inspiration from the heavens and from nature as God’s handiwork. But 100 years ago many scientists came to see nature as a deterministic machine that had existed forever with “nothing for a god to do”. Particle Physicist Stephen Barr points to five “plot twists” in the last century of science that tip the balance toward faith in a Creator.
Discussing the Big Bang… that demonstrates that the universe had a beginning and multiple “anthropic coincidences” that point to a universe that had life in mind… Barr moves on to tackle the mystery of human free will and consciousness. Barr introduces some new ideas about the order we see always proceeding from more profound order or symmetry rather than from chaos. He also provides some fresh perspective on some of the ideas that RTB has presented before. This is an opportunity to strengthen our use of science for commending faith.
Dr. Nave is our current chapter president and a retired professor of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University. Bruce Phillips is a long time standing member of the ATL RTB chapter and an active member of the Areopagus, our sister ministry.

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta
Dr. Jerri Nims Rooker , Associate Director of the Center for Law, Health and Society at Georgia State University will discuss the health, law, ethical and faith issues associated with embryonic stem cell research. Heralded as having great promise in the curing of many diseases and injuries, it has been very controversial because of the use of human embryos. Having recently organized a conference at GSU on the various aspects of stem cell research, Jerri can address the current status of the research as well as some of the viewpoints of people of faith. Her presentation will include some of the alternatives to the use of human embryos, and will address some of the Biblical basis for the views of stem cell use that are held by Christians.
Having received her doctorate in law (J.D.) from the Georgia State University College of Law, Dr. Rooker was in private corporate law practice in Atlanta before joining the Center. She manages the Center’s community programs, including those related to health law. She has researched and written on health law issues, including the ethics of stem cell research. She has been active with the Georgia legislature as they have debated issues related to stem cells and other health issues.
There will be a time of discussion after Dr. Rooker’s presentation.

Dr. David Sherrill reviews “The Edge of Evolution”
Dr. David Sherrill
Professor of Chemistry
GA Tech
Thursday, March 27th - 7:00 PM
The “Net”
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta
Dr. Sherrill will present a review of the book , "The Edge of Evolution," by Lehigh University biochemist Professor Michael Behe . Dr. Behe is one of the leaders of the "Intelligent Design" movement, and in his new book, he attempts to argue on qualitative and quantitative grounds that random mutation and natural selection are insufficient to give rise to the biochemical complexity observed in living organisms.
David Sherrill received his B.S. in Chemistry from MIT in 1992 and his Ph.D. in computational quantum chemistry in 1996 after working as an NSF graduate fellow in the laboratory of Henry F. "Fritz" Schaefer at the University of Georgia. After an NSF postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, he came to Georgia Tech in 1999 as an Assistant Professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and was promoted to full Professor in 2008. Since 2006, he has also held a joint appointment with the Computational Science and Engineering division of the College of Computing. He serves as co-director of the Center for Computational Molecular Science and Technology. His area of research is quantum chemistry, involving the calculation of electronic structures. The success of this research is indicated by the publication of over 70 peer-reviewed articles and the achievement of the rank of Professor in a very short time period. Interest in teaching is also reflected in the winning of the W. Howard Ector Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006.

Growing Edges in the Science-Faith Dialog
“Mini-Conference”
Thursday, February 28th - 7:00 PM
The “Net”
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta
The February meeting of RTB will be structured like a mini-conference with several short presentations by some of our members. They’ll be speaking on what they see as the growing edges of the effort to find harmony or congruence between science and faith . We will leave time for discussion afterward to allow input from the audience about how you see the challenge of using science to strengthen faith.
During the past year we have had far-ranging conversations that included the current dialogs about intelligent design, evolution, Francis Collins’ biologos, the fine-tuning of the universe for human life, etc. We have had presentations on the reliability of the Bible and a presentation on The Miracle of the Kidney to continue our series on the miracle of life and the body. We have asked the presenters to share about their personal “growing edge”, what they are thinking about and praying about at present in the arena of using science and nature to bring people to think about their Creator.
