First around the tables and then with the group as a whole, we would like to get to know you better. So join us and come prepared to share briefly what draws you to RTB, your particular background and interests, and what you would like to see RTB do in the coming year.  What topics, outreach activities, or other emphases would you like to see RTB Atlanta address?

 * Please let us know if the cost of the tickets are a problem and we will try to work something out as we would like for you to be able to attend.

Our 2009 Speakers…

All of our 2009 speakers have received special invitations to come join us so this is your chance to come meet them and chat in a casual atmosphere. This is a great chance to catch up even if you missed their presentation. Presentation / Discussion by Dean D’Adamo

Dadamo

Thursday, October 29th - 7:00 PM

"The Net"

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church

955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta

This month’s meeting will be a “discussion of a collection of some of the most compelling scientific arguments that point to a divine direction to our experience. Topics will include the formation of the Universe, the formation of life, the nature of evolution, the biological processes that support life and the kitchen sink" according to our presenter, Dean D’Adamo. Dean has read widely of the books from physics, astronomy, and biology to try to build a compelling case for a Creator, and over the past couple of years has put together a “white paper” of the perspective he has gotten from this study.

This session is intended to be an open treatment of the topics at a level which should be useful to pastors and youth pastors who might be interested in information at an understandable level to encourage others to see science as something which can be an ally to faith and not an enemy.

Gonzalez and Richards argue that the particular place of our planet in the Milky Way galaxy is a very unusual one, one positioned to make it possible for us to look out into the galaxy and the universe beyond and learn about God’s creation. From most places in the galaxy our view would be greatly obscured. They suggest that God intends for us to learn of His creation, and that our capacity to learn about the universe and in fact our very existence depends upon finely tuned circumstances.

Drawing upon the book The Privileged Planet and with segments from the DVD based on the book, the thesis will be presented that God has provided us with the opportunity to know about His creation. From this you might conclude that our growing understanding of our world and the universe is part of His purpose for mankind and that it is part of His will that we seek to understand His creation.  The material from The Privileged Planet will be used to start discussion of how we use understanding of nature to praise God.

How Can God’s Creation Speak to Skeptics?

Thursday, August 27th - 7:00 PM

"The Net"

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church

955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta

From “consider the heavens” to the reflection that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made”, there are parts of God’s creation that speak to us deeply about His providence and His creation. This forum will explore those aspects of the creation that speak to us and which we think can be of use in recommending faith to skeptics. What part of God’s creation is most convincing to you as evidence for a Creator? We are planning a small panel of perhaps four persons to make brief presentations as conversation starters and then encourage the group to share brief pictures of what in nature moves them to reverence for the Creator.

Ideas have consequences, and they often float, largely undetected, in the intellectual air we breathe. Some ideas are liberating -- such as Christianity, representative self-government, and economic freedom; others are toxic, and they eat away at the dignity of the individual and the moral foundations of culture.

The 20th century was the most violent and destructive period in human history, and the social chaos, political turmoil, and cultural crises of the past century were the cumulative result of insidious ideas that germinated in some of the most popular and influential literature of the past 500 years.

"The Worst Books Ever Written" is a survey of the 25 books that have most undermined Western culture, corrupted our values, and destroyed countless millions of lives -- and why Christians should know these works.

Dr. Breshears has just returned from a lecture tour in Poland and he will include some reflections on Poland and the academic freedom that Polish professors enjoy vis-a-vis American academicians.

Thursday, April 30th - 7:00 PM

This session will be a brief overview of time – the way it is measured and the way it is affected by relativity.  It will also deal with the kind of clocks we find in nature.

What does it take to be considered one of God’s clocks?

The primary emphasis will be on methods for time measurement that appear to be tamperproof by man. On the large scale in the universe, there are light sources that appear to have a standard brightness, like Cepheid variable stars and Type-1A supernovas. Their measured brightness is then a measure of distance, and with the known speed of light they become a measure of time. On the earth the radioactive decay of a nucleus is quite impervious to anything man can throw at it outside a direct particle impact in an accelerator. The methods of time measurement will be discussed and an assessment of the reliability of these clocks will made.

Over the past year, a number of questions have been raised in our RTB sessions about the nature of time. After the presentation, there will be an open discussion of time and our ways of assessing it.

  DUAL REVELATION

Thursday, March 26th - 7:00 PM

"The Net"

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church

955 Johnson Ferry Rd , Marietta

A DVD presentation followed by a discussion of the appropriate roles of the Word of God and the word of nature in telling us about God’s universe.  Reasons to Believe has produced the DVD “Dual Revelation” to address the issues of the harmony of science and the Bible, and RTB comes down solidly on an assertion that these two revelations are compatible and complementary.  It starts with a young girl asking her father the question “Dad, are there dinosaurs in the Bible?” How would you answer that question to a child?  The DVD assesses the theistic evolution, young earth creationism and old earth creationism viewpoints.

The 57 minute DVD includes commentary from Christian scholars in both theological and scientific fields. It will serve as the springboard for a discussion of the issues raised.

ATL RTB February Chapter Meeting...

Atlanta RTB February chapter meeting will be in conjunction with…

“Is Faith Delusional?”

dilusion

According to Richard Dawkins, there’s no difference between God and the Easter Bunny. Is God really just a trick or a deception like the Tooth Fairy? Is accepting God’s existence a fantasy fit only for the consumption of a child? In a world with so many tears is belief in God simply a lie we use to persuade a smile? Join RZIM for a thought provoking evening featuring Ravi Zacharias as he addresses the intellectual assumptions surrounding atheism while contrasting the validity of the Christian faith in his special message, “Is Faith Delusional?” Question & Answer session to follow this message.

John Lennox is on the faculty of Mathematics at Oxford and author of “God’s Undertaker, Has Science Buried God?”  He is an outstanding speaker and writer in defense of the Christian faith. He debated Richard Dawkins in Birmingham last year.

Before the event, we will be gathering at Mary Mac’s Tea Room at 224 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA at 5 pm. It is just three blocks east of Peachtree Street and close to the Civic Center.

This announcement is being sent early because we are asking you to participate. Look at the proposed questions for discussion and prepare a three-minute statement on one which is currently meaningful to you. We will have a general forum on these questions. If you will notify us of your intent to make a statement, we will give you a three-minute segment at the beginning of the program.  After the prepared statements, we will proceed with this agenda of questions in a general group discussion.

1. How can reflection on science and the observation of nature contribute best toward influencing persons to consider the Christian faith?

2. What aspects of nature are most inspiring to you as an encouragement to your faith?

3. What aspects of nature do you consider most powerful or effective in persuading skeptics to consider faith?

4. What positions or statements of present or past scientists have you used to help communicate the case for faith?

5. What do you consider to be the appropriate perspective of “intelligent design”?

6. What books or resources have been personally meaningful to you in strengthening your faith or giving you tools with which to communicate faith?

7. What are the areas in Scripture that you see as most crucial to examine as guidelines for our views of science and nature?
