We have no RTB Atlanta meeting for November, but we encourage you to have a look at some special resources that were developed by Dr. Jefrey Breshears, President of Areopagus in Atlanta, as a part of his visit to Reasons to Believe headquarters in Glendora, California this summer.

While at RTB he researched and wrote some articles for them and was interviewed by Dr. Ken Samples on his radio program, "Straight-Thinking," on the theme of his book, "The Problem of Christian Anti-Intellectualism."

RTB has now begun publishing the first installments of the articles he wrote, which you can access at...

Also, you can log-on and listen to the radio interviews he did with Ken Samples at...

Jefrey also made two presentations to the SES National Apologetics Conference in Charlotte recently, so he has been busy! Our congratulations to Jefrey for these accomplishments.

Several years ago Dr. Stephen Meyer wrote a ground breaking book Signature in the Cell in which he set out the case for the need for intelligence at the origin of life.  Most of his critics either did not read the book, misunderstood it, or ignored what he said to make whatever attack they felt necessary. One recurring line was that in the cell today we see genetic material being spliced and recombined to make new information - so Meyer's hypothesis that information cannot be generated by “natural” processes is obviously refuted.

But Meyer was talking about de novo information - the origin of the original information in the cell.  He was not talking about processes that take in information as part of their "raw materials."  But this concession annoyed him, since he knew there was another argument to make.

Now he has made that more complex argument:  that even the information we see in developed animal forms is itself incapable of being generated by naturalistic processes.  He takes as his starting point the Cambrian Explosion - that sudden arrival, 500 million years ago, of most of the major phyla or body plans we see today.  How could this have happened?  What is involved in creating a new body plan?  Is it possible through some stepwise evolutionary process?  Or are the necessary parts so tightly interwoven that we are faced with a massive example of "irreducible complexity?"

Be prepared to hear about developmental Gene Regulatory Networks, epigenetics, and problems with the Tree of Life."  It's a fascinating journey - even if we are only able to scratch the surface.  But don't forget Anomalicaris !

The discussion of how God created life is one of the most important discussions in Christian apologetics for our time in history. Thanks to Areopagus for making the arrangements for this significant dialog between Dr. Fuz Rana of RTB and Dr  Darrel Falk.

Remember: Reasons to Believe Atlanta will not meet at Johnson Ferry this month. Please join us for the Areopagus-sponsored event at Perimeter Church on October 3rd.

This will be a review of some of the content of  a meeting titled “How Did It All Begin?” held at Covenant Fellowship Church in Philadelphia in April of 2013.  At that conference, John Lennox gave two addresses titled “Beginning of the Universe” and “Beginning of Life”.  We will view short segments of those two addresses and have a time of discussion of each. The discussion of the “Beginning of the Universe” segment will be led by Dr. Rod Nave, Ph. D. Physics. The discussion of the “Beginning of Life” segment will be led by Dr. Howard Deutsch, Ph. D. Chemistry.

The August meeting will also feature comments from Dr. Jefrey Breshears about his time this summer as a visiting  scholar at RTB national headquarters.

For decades Young-Earth Creationists have challenged many of the generally accepted conclusions of astronomers and geologists that the universe and Earth are billions of years old. They have attempted to offer scientific arguments to legitimize their belief the universe and Earth are only thousands of years old. But do their arguments remain standing when all the evidence is weighed? Astronomer Eric Smith and former Young-Earth Creationist Ben Smith believe the young-Earth arguments collapse under the weight of the evidence. Come and see for yourself.

Three Philosophers

The information for reproducing a living cell or a living human resides in the DNA. Does the ability to modify DNA and produce a new variety of living cell cast doubt on the creative activity of God or affirm it? Fuz Rana argues strongly that the enormous effort and ingenuity required to make small modifications in existing living cells is a powerful pointer to the intentional and intelligent agency of the God of the Bible. We will review the progress made in bioengineering with its promise and potential dangers.

• Is there substantial evidence for human evolution, and should Christians abandon the historic Biblical view of human origins and embrace theistic evolution?

• Is theistic evolution scientifically supportable, and is it compatible with key Christian doctrines?

• Is it possible to develop a human origins model that incorporates the latest scientific advances while retaining the historic Christian view of humanity’s creation?

In this presentation, Dr. Fazale Rana sets forth a creation model for human origins that integrates both the scientific data and the Biblical creation texts into a single framework. In the process, he demonstrates that harmony exists between the traditional Biblical view of human origins and advances in molecular anthropology and archaeology.

February Chapter Meeting

If God Made the Universe

Presided by...

Rod Nave

February 28th  - 7:00 PM

Room 108

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta
Directions to Johnson Ferry Baptist

For our February meeting, we will do a review and discussion of two segments of the DVD study series with this title, also making use of the book “Why the Universe is the Way It Is” by Hugh Ross. The basic subject matter is astronomy and cosmology and the strong case that can be made for the God of the Bible from what we see in the universe. The emphasis will be upon how individuals or groups can use this material for small group studies or other types of outreach.

If God Made the Universe resources

An important part of the agenda of this meeting will be the discussion of possibilities for outreach to churches, youth groups, and other study groups with the important message that science and faith are not enemies. While the “If God Made the Universe” resource will be the resource that will be examined most closely, we will have brief looks at the “Ask” resource from Ravi Zacharias ministries, “The Truth Project” from Focus on the Family and others. If you have a favorite apologetics resource, you are invited to bring it and briefly describe it in this discussion.

January Chapter Meeting

Hidden Treasures in the Book of Job

Presided by...

Rod Nave

January 31st  - 7:00 PM

Room 105

<<Across the hall from our normal room>>

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
955 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta
Directions to Johnson Ferry Baptist

For the January meeting, we will examine Hugh Ross’s latest book for the unique insights that the book of Job brings to apologetics.

Hidden Treasures Speakers

Is Job the oldest book in the Bible, chronologically? If the content of Job were in the hands of the persons who received Genesis and Deuteronomy, could that help fill some of the alleged gaps in those two books? Ben Smith will take the lead in discussing these ideas from Ch 1-2 of the book.

Can Job help resolve some of the creation-day controversies? Perhaps Job and Genesis should be looked at together to form a balanced picture of the creation narrative. Eric Smith will take the lead in this discussion, which is addressed in Ch 5 of the book.

The book of Job is rich in its treatment of the animal kingdom and the uniqueness of humans in God’s creation. Hugh Ross is a great animal lover and has spent a good bit of time examining the role of animals in the creation. Andrea Smith, also an animal lover, will take the lead in this discussion of humans and animals. Ross’s treatment starts with Ch 7.

An examination of the book of Job takes us to some topics that we have not discussed before in an RTB Atlanta meeting, so please join us for a look at Job’s creation narrative and the richness of this unique book of the Bible.
